വേലിയേറ്റം (The high tide)

ഭൂമിയിലുള്ള എല്ലാ വസ്തുക്കളെയും ഭൂമി അതിന്റെ കേന്ദ്രത്തിലേക്ക് ആകര്‍ഷിക്കുന്നു. സമുദ്രത്തിലെ ജലവും ഭൂഖണ്ഡങ്ങളും (കരയും) എല്ലാം ചേര്‍ന്ന് ഒരു ഗോളമായി നിലകൊള്ളുന്നത് ഈ ബലത്താലാണ്. അതുപോലെ ചന്ദ്രനും ഭൂമിയിലുള്ള വസ്തുക്കളില്‍ അതിന്റേതായ ഗുരുത്വാകര്‍ഷണം പ്രയോഗിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. ഭൂമിയില്‍ ചന്ദ്രന്‍ പ്രയോഗിക്കുന്ന ആകര്‍ഷണബലം നിമിത്തം സമുദ്രത്തിലെ ജലം ചന്ദ്രനഭിമുഖമായി വരുന്ന ഭാഗത്ത് ഉയരുന്നു. ഇതാണ് വേലിയേറ്റത്തിന് കാരണം. (Earth attracts all objects towards its centre. It is because of this force that the oceans and the continents are all held together in the form of a globe. Similarly the moon also exerts its own gravitational force of attraction on the bodies on the earth. Because of this force of attraction exerted by the moon, the sea water facing the moon rises. This is the reason for the occurrence of the high tide.)

ഭൂഗുരുത്വാകര്‍ഷണവും ഗുരുത്വാകര്‍ഷണവും  (Gravity and Gravitation)

വസ്തുവും ഭൂമിയും തമ്മിലുള്ള ആകര്‍ഷണബലമാണ് ഭൂഗുരുത്വാകര്‍ഷണബലം. എന്നാല്‍ ഏതെങ്കിലും രണ്ടു വസ്തുക്കള്‍ തമ്മിലുള്ള പരസ്പരാകര്‍ഷണബലമാണ് ഗുരുത്വാകര്‍ഷണബലം. (Force of gravity is the force of attraction between a body and the earth whereas the mutual force of attraction between any two bodies is the force of gravitation.)
